A story brought to life
Objects, sounds, visual prompts and gentle movement help bring the story within reach. Sensory experiences are introduced thoughtfully, with time to process and respond.
Sensory stories
A shared story can be a sound, a texture, a movement or a moment of connection. EmpowerEd North sensory stories offer children and young people with complex needs a calm way to explore, communicate and enjoy being part of a group.
The experience
Objects, sounds, visual prompts and gentle movement help bring the story within reach. Sensory experiences are introduced thoughtfully, with time to process and respond.
Speech, sounds, gesture, facial expression, body movement and familiar communication aids all have a place. Choices and refusals are respected.
Learners can observe first, revisit an activity or take a break. The emphasis is on enjoyment and connection, with support shaped around individual preferences.
Who can take part
Sessions are designed for children and young people with complex needs, including autistic learners, learners with severe or profound learning disabilities and those who communicate without speech. We discuss individual needs before confirming a place.
A parent, carer or agreed supporting adult remains throughout the session and provides the learner's usual personal support. Please tell us about access requirements, sensory preferences and communication needs when arranging a place.
Janice is a specialist SEND and autism teacher with over 20 years of experience. She has Designated Safeguarding Lead training, updated safeguarding and Prevent training, and a current Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification.
